Overall seafood imports through the first three months of 2017 slipped when compared to the same period a year ago.

Total US seafood imports through March were 666,698 metric tons, a 3 percent drop from the the 686,843 metric tons imported through March in 2016.

The value of the imports during this period, however, rose nearly 7 percent to $4.83 billion (€4.42 billion), according to statistics released Thursday by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

The lower-volume-higher-value trend was exhibited by many of the nation's most popular seafood species.
