Insect meal is unlikely to become a major source of protein in aquaculture feed for at least the next five to 10 years, according to a lead researcher working with black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens)meal as a supplement to soybean meal at the Hagerman Fish Culture Experiment Station, the Aquaculture Research Institute and the University of Idaho.

“Economically in terms of money it’s not possible for insect protein to be used as source of protein ingredient,” Vikar Kumar, assistant professor of research into fish nutrition and nutrigenomics at the University of Ihaho told IntraFish.
