Oregon's Dungeness crab industry is going through some bumpy times following a gangbuster 2021-2022 season, when the state's most valuable seafood harvest reached a record $91.5 million (€85.2 million).
This year's dynamics, however, have the industry cautiously optimistic, said Tim Novotny, executive director of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission.
Soaring prices have tamped down several years of unprecedented demand, even with a smaller overall US crab supply, he said.
"That was the double-edged sword," Novotny told IntraFish. "Last year with the price set so high, you saw that passed down to the consumer, and eventually it became a luxury item that was hard to continue to move."
