Average household spending on seafood in Japan in March fell by 6.3 percent year-on-year, apparently due to the increasingly worrying shortage of fresh fish.

It was the eighth straight month of decline, beginning in August last year and reaching a low of 8.3 percent in December.

Overall household expenditure for March fell by 1.3 percent, excluding the effect of price fluctuations, according to the survey by the Japan Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
