The need to boost the volume of sustainable feed is becoming more urgent as new guidelines are being developed under the European Union's Green Deal, alongside Norway's climate goal of producing 25 percent of its aquaculture feed locally by 2034.

The EU's regulatory update includes a new deforestation regulation (EUDR) that takes effect Jan. 1, 2026.

This regulation could put pressure on imported soy, a major ingredient in aquaculture feed, feed executives told IntraFish.

The EUDR requires companies trading in products, including cattle, cocoa, palm oil and soy to conduct extensive diligence on their value chain to ensure products do not result from recent deforestation, forest degradation or breaches of local environmental and social laws.
