Massachusetts-based biotechnology company KnipBio received its second Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use its single-cell protein meal in shrimp feed.

KnipBio is the first single-cell protein to receive the recognition for both its finfish feed -- granted in 2019 -- and its crustaceans feed.

The two approvals will boost the company's commercialization process to produce alternative proteins for the $50 billion (€44 million) aquafeed market, KnipBio CEO Larry Feinberg said.
