The Committee on World Food Security (CFS), meeting in Rome Oct. 18, recognized the value of wild fisheries and aquaculture to global food security and nutrition, as a primary source of protein and essential nutrients, and as a provider of income and livelihoods.

The CFS, which was established in 1974 as an inter-governmental body to serve as a forum in the United Nations for review and follow-up of policies concerning world food security, said the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture is a fundamental condition for food security and nutrition.
