Trucks transporting live salmon smolts were attacked during an upsurge in violence in Chile's southern central La Araucania region.

Details of the incident are sketchy, but a spate of violent attacks in the region in recent days was condemned by the Chile Salmon Council, a trade group whose members --AquaChile, Mowi, Cermaq and Salmones Aysen -- account for around half of Chile's national salmon production.

"These acts of violence put at risk the development of the country and a number of industrial activities in Chile," the Chile Salmon Council said in a joint statement with salmon producers from the southern Magallanes region.
