British citizens just aren’t eating enough seafood. That’s the finding of a newly released report by Public Health England (PHE), whose National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) is designed to assess the diet, nutrient intake and nutritional status of the general population in the United Kingdom.
In the UK population as a whole, the average intake of oily fish was below current government recommended levels of at least one portion of oily fish per week for all ages (140 grams); oily fish include anchovies, carp, trout, mackerel, herring, jack fish, pilchards, salmon (including canned), sardines, sprats, swordfish, tuna (fresh only) and whitebait.
