Claire Atwood visits the first pilchard cannery to be built in South Africa during the past 30 years; it is scheduled to open in Mossel Bay this month
Construction of the 5600sq m cannery has been instigated by an unexplained movement of pilchard shoals from traditional fishing grounds on the west coast to warmer waters on the south east coast of the country, near to Mossel Bay.
The shift in pilchard stocks has been gradual, but its impact on South Africa's existing canneries has been severe.
