A SYSTEM to alert fishermen and processors to potentially dangerous seafood products is being piloted by the UK Shellfish Biotoxin Database project.

Starting at the end of July, the trial scheme uses a traffic light system of colours on a map to alert fishermen to potentially hazardous areas of seafood.

The project, led by Seafood Scotland and funded by the Food Standards Agency (Scotland), Scottish Government, Scottish Fishermen’s Trust and the UK Seafish Industry Authority, is investigating whether sharing industry biotoxin test results will help to reduce the risk of contaminated product reaching the consumer by helping fishermen avoid areas where biotoxins may be present.
