FIRST Process has designed the world's first fully automated packaging line, according to Petter Leon Fauske, president. Installed in FosnavÂg Seafood in December 2006, the line handles frozen round pelagic fish or fillets.
Instead of packing directly into cartons, graded fish are weighed and dropped into opened plastic bags which are sealed before being cartonned.
There is the option of creating a vacuum in the fillet bags which leads to better storage and an increase in shelf-life.
The machine, which saves the two workers normally folding the plastic sheet in the cartons, is manufactured by one of First Process's partners, Niverplast of the Netherlands and was further developed by First Process, Niverplast and FosnavÂg Seafood.
