WORK on the first BRC food industry standard in began in 1996 as UK retailers realised that there were many advantages to be gained from working together on food safety issues.
The BRC Food Technical Standard was introduced in 1998. It was designed to evaluate manufacturers of retailers’ own brand food products. Under EU law, retailers and brand owners have a legal responsibility for their brands, and the aim was to help them with their due diligence defence should they be prosecuted by the enforcement authorities.
