Tom Wray describes new equipment that will automatically detect worms in whitefish fillets at speeds of up to one fillet per second

NEW equipment that will make possible the automatic inspection of fish fillets for undesirable nematodes (roundworm larvae) while moving at speed on a conveyor belt is being developed in Norway by Fiskeriforskning (the Norwegian Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture Research).

The new technology utilises special light and computer programmes to help create pictures that show worm larvae in fillets. It is also able to detect bloodstains, remains of skin and the black membrane lining the abdominal cavity.
