Thursday saw the launch of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) in London, United Kingdom, to tackle the growing and "urgent" issue of "ghost" fishing gear in the world's oceans.

The GGGI, initiated and driven by World Animal Protection, is bringing together experts, including the United Nations Environment Programme, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Young’s Seafood Limited and Australia’s Northern Prawn Fishery in a bid to "ensure safer, cleaner oceans."

Lost and abandoned fishing gear, also known as "ghost gear," poses a significant threat to the health and productivity of our oceans, the organizations said Friday.
