Time for Brazil to act on tilapia
More pressure was piled on to the Brazilian government today to enable the country reach its aquaculture potential, in a presentation from Fernando Kubitza.
If 0.01 percent of the five million hectares of freshwater reservoirs existing in Brazil contained tilapia cages it would produce an extra one million metric tons of fish per year with negligible impact, he told a large auditorium of producers.
The reservoirs -- built largely for hydropower generation -- are already being used for tilapia cages, but on a tiny scale.
As it is, Brazilian tilapia is mainly produced in ponds.
