Women in seafood will be in the spotlight at this week's SeaWeb Seafood Summit in St Julian's, Malta.
Organized by the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF), a dedicated panel will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 11.00 a.m., with the aim to highlight women's crucial contribution to the sector.
"IPNLF works with many women who occupy prominent roles throughout the value chain in our efforts to demonstrate and develop the value of one-by-one tuna fisheries," the foundation said.
"We therefore see it is of vital importance to recognize and celebrate the qualities and skillsets women can bring to the global seafood industry."
The panel -- A New Agender: Sex and the Seafood Sector’s Production, Profits and Promotion -- has the aim to discuss the role and importance of women in the seafood industry.
Marie Christine Monfort, author of a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report released last year, will give a video presentation.
This is followed by an interactive session with panelists Ashley Apel of Fair Trade, USA, Sandra Hinni, project management fisheries sustainability at Swiss retail chain Migros, Duncan Leadbitter of Fish Matter, Helen Packer of Anova and Elisabeth Fischer, reporter at IntraFish, and author of the IntraFish Women in Seafood series.
IPNLF will also be launching a new film -- Women at the Water-Front -- which features many voices from the one-by-one tuna supply chain.
