US retailer Hy-Vee is expecting its crab sales volume this December to grow by 30 to 40 percent, thanks to its promotion of king crab purchased exclusively from Trident Seafoods' vessel, the Billikin.

It is accomplishing the increase without the help of Russian king crab, which last year made up a significant portion of its sales volume and used to account for more than half of its crab,  Kurt Johnson, meat supervisor for the southeast region, told IntraFish.

The company is going domestic as much as possible in response to feedback from customers and in alignment with its own sustainability goals, he said.
