Over the past few decades, the effects of trade liberalization on global seafood have been as monumental as they have been controversial — and the process is nowhere near the finish line.

“In the future, we will have even freer trade than we do today,” said Juan Zapatero of the European Union directorate-general for fisheries and maritime affairs (DG Fish). “That will mean fewer tariffs and eventually no tariffs at all. That is a fact.”

Yet, very few aspects of trade liberalization can be consigned to the realm of facts.
