Without question, the main impact of Russia’s import ban on the country’s flourishing surimi industry is the cut-off in the access to raw material from Alaska.
But in a market where the quality and choice of surimi products has been improving rapidly since the beginning of the year, looking to Asia or Latin America for raw material could prove to be a setback.
“The main impact is it [Russia] has had to stop sourcing from Alaska -- and they were actually doing a fair amount of their sourcing from Alaska pollock,” Shivram Warrior, president of the East India Surimi Company, told IntraFish.
