In what may be the first steps toward establishing its own eco-label, the board of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) voted to move ahead with research into the possible establishment an “Alaska Gold Standard” to certify seafood from Alaska as wild, natural and sustainable. One possible idea being debated is to convert the ASMI logo into an eco-label, since it’s already used on many Alaska seafood products.
Five members of the seven-member ASMI board, meeting Thursday in Anchorage, Alaska, voted to further investigate creation of an eco-label program based on Alaska Department of Fish & Game fisheries management practices in place since Alaska became a state in 1959.
