The certification mark provides legal evidence a product with the name Wild American, or the Wild American Shrimp logo, was certified as caught wild in the open Gulf of Mexico or the south Atlantic Ocean, WASI spokesperson Jenny Schmitt told IntraFish.
The registered status means WASI can take legal action against other companies or organizations that use the phrase “Wild American Shrimp.”
The seafood marketing organization has owned the mark “Wild American” and the Certified Wild American Shrimp logo since 2003, when the group applied to register the phrases and images with the PTO.
