Along with fishing for salmon, crab, pollock, halibut and other wild stocks in Alaska, Seattle-based Icicle has in recent years purchased a U.S.-based salmon farming company and entered into a joint venture to grow trout and coho in Chile.
The idea is to provide customers with the full range of product choices they desire, CEO Dennis Guhlke (pictured) told IntraFish.
"We’re very comfortable with the idea farmed salmon and wild salmon do complement each other. We’ve been involved in farmed salmon down in Chile, and in some markets the products may compete, but in most markets we see customers that need to buy both, and it’s nice to be in the position of having both to offer,” said Guhlke, who replaced Don Giles as CEO in June after serving as chief financial officer.
