Uganda, which ranks among the major fish producing and consuming nations in the African continent, is keen on developing its aquaculture sector to offset the problems plaguing the wild-catch sector, the Ugandan Commissioner for Fisheries told FFI.

“The dangers of over exploitation and declining yields, and the need to develop a sustainable fisheries management policy are reflected in the mandate of the [Ugandan] Fisheries Department, which also recognizes the potential of aquaculture to contribute to the growing national demand, and generate new export orientated activities,” said Wilson Waiswa Mwanja, the Ugandan Commissioner for Fisheries.
