A year ago, The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) approved guidelines for an eco-label for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. The new rules confirmed the MSC, which met the majority of FAO's criteria, was the dominant agency for eco-labeled fish.

The MSC was established in the mid-1990s following dialogue between the environmental organization World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Unilever. The birth of eco-labeling created a debate in fisheries around the world. In the Nordic countries, neither industry organizations or government authorities managed to establish an eco-label with enough clout to contest the MSC logo.
