The village of Borgarfjordur Eystra in the east of Iceland has seen its largest employer forced to make the whole workforce redundant.
Fiskverkun Karls Sveinssonar employed between 15 and 20 staff to produce that was in high demand until a few years ago.
Never a large producer, the company had an annual production of between 200 and 300 metric tons, until demand for its products dropped as the use of phosphates to make saltfish whiter have become more common.
The use of these additives results in saltfish being whiter and also retaining a higher proportion of water, and Karl Sveinsson is now demanding an investigation into the use of additives which are illegal but still in widespread use.
