Wally Stevens, executive director of the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), told Intrafish he believes the economy in the United States in 2009 impacted seafood consumption since so much seafood is consumed in restaurants and the restaurant business suffered in 2009.

"If that’s where seafood is principally consumed, I’m really surprised to see the consumption number being relatively flat," he said, finding hope in the rising number of species in the top 10 most-consumed list being affiliated with fish farming.

"Other than Alaskan pollock and canned tuna, I think everything else can an element of farming with it, or in its future.
