UK retailer Waitrose said it will sponsor this year’s World Fisheries Congress (WFC) in May 2012, in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The event will "examine the science that underpins sustainable fishing; adaptive management and tools to cope with changing environments; the social and economic cost of failure; and meeting increasing food and nutrition needs through cultivation," WFC said in a statement.
“With so many species under pressure, or on the brink of extinction, the issues we face as retailers, producers and suppliers have never been more urgent," Quentin Clark, head of sustainability and ethical sourcing for Waitrose, said in a statement.
Sustainability is "not just crucial to any environmental debate; it is also central to any commercial debate," Clark said.
"The fishing industry needs abundant fish to catch and sell.
