Waitrose says it won't follow the example of Foodvest Group company Young’s Seafood and return to buying North Sea cod unless more vessels switch from trawling to longline fishing.
The firm will remain with line-caught Atlantic cod from its current supply base in Iceland for now, Jeremy Langley, the chain's specialist fish buyer, told IntraFish.
“Fishing methods are a very important part of our overall sustainability policy, and we’re looking for methods that minimize fuel costs and the carbon footprint of the fishing,” he said.
