Tilapia farming outfit VitaFish went bankrupt in August, and its rescuer, sturgeon farmer Aqua Bio, said it is considering whether to continue with tilapia or switch to one of a number of potential species in the long term.

The options include pangasius, pike, perch, sturgeon or black bass.

No decision has been made and the firm plans to perform experiments and market analysis to identify the best course of action, Aqua Bio’s head biologist, Willy Verdonck, told IntraFish.

“I’m not excluding that in the near future we will do something experimental with sturgeon which is our main fish species we’ve been working with for 20 years,” he said.
