Indonesia and Thailand ended up putting in a lot more production than anticipated in 2009, as did Egypt, which increased its output, Kevin Fitzsimmons, a tilapia researcher and industry consultant, told IntraFish at the World Aquaculture Society (WAS) meeting last week in San Diego, Calif.
“We hit over three million metric tons in 2009, and I expect we’ll be at 3.1 million metric tons in 2010,” he said, noting new farms coming online in Malaysia, Brazil and China, and existing farms increasing intensity and stocking rates.
