AquaBounty Technologies' announced Thursday that its genetically modified (GM) salmon was approved for sale in Canada.
Health Canada concluded its review of the company's AquAdvantage Salmon (AAS) and OK'd it for commercial sale in Canada, saying the fish does not raise concerns related to food safety.
Ron Stotish, CEO of AquaBounty, was speaking at the 2016 IntraFish Seafood Investor Forum in New York City, when news of the approval broke.
"It's been a long haul and these approvals are important," he told IntraFish. "Having been approved in the US and now in Canada, that's a big deal."
In November, the US government approved the salmon for sale in the United States.
