The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) issued recommendations Friday saying the use of wild-caught fish as feed for farm-raised fish won't be permitted.
Farmed salmon are fed feed that includes wild-caught fish, making them ineligible for the coveted USDA organic seal, presently not permitted on seafood products.
"Fishmeal and fish oil produced from wild fish and other wild aquatic animals, or any portion of the wild fish that do not qualify as provided in this section cannot be used in organic production of aquatic animals, or certified or labeled as organic," the committee said in its recommendations.
