New US regulations governing incidental catch of dolphins by tuna harvesting vessels and the labeling of tuna products as "dolphin safe" will come into force next week.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announced Tuesday it has revised the requirements of the Dolphin Protection Consumer Information Act (DPCIA) to "better ensure dolphin-safe labels comply with the requirements of [the law]."

The new rule modifies requirements for certifications that must accompany fisheries certificates or origin; on-board storage requirements of dolphin-safe and non-dolphin-safe tuna; reporting requirements for tracking domestic tuna canning and processing operations; and creates new reporting requirements for processors.
