US tilapia imports fell drastically last year by 12 percent in volume and 23 percent in value compared to 2015 imports, according to the latest figures from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
The United States imported an overall 197,239 metric tons of tilapia worth $754.9 million (€709 million) in 2016. Could 'fake news' be to blame for the decline?
Of that total, frozen fillets was the largest import category, accounting for 65 percent of the total: 128,320 metric tons worth $513.2 million (€482 million), a 19 and 27 percent decrease in volume and value, respectively.
