Fresh export figures reveal how Chilean salmon has started displacing its Norwegian counterpart in the US market.

Although US salmon consumption rose for the first time in five years in 2011, the country's imports of Norwegian salmon halved in value compared to 2010, dropping to NOK 1.2 billion (€157.1 million/$208.3 million), according to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council show.

This was despite the fact the US consumed 2 percent more Atlantic salmon in 2011, at around 235,000 metric tons (wet fish equivalent).
