Exporting seafood from the United States into the European Union is about to get more difficult and require more steps beginning later this year as new regulations kick in.

Among the changes, EU importers of products ready for retail sale will be asking harvesters and exporters where the product was caught and what gear and technology was used to catch it starting Dec. 13.

At a meeting of the Northwest Fisheries Association in Seattle, Washington, members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) told attendees the changes only apply to products that won't be processed further or whole fish and raw materials.
