Vinh Hoan, the first pangasius supplier to become ASC certified, has not found any US takers for the product since winning the honor last month.
“Right now, more and more (US) retailers – as far as customers – are asking for that, but when we come to the pricing negotiations, they get turned off,” San Phan, sales executive for Vinh Hoan USA, told IntraFish.
The company charges a premium of $0.15 (0.11) to $0.20 (€0.15) per pound for the ASC certified product , a price hike that its European customers are willing to accept just to have product carrying the eco-standard.
