United States government officials admitted Wednesday they've been unintentionally violating US trade acts for years by signing off on health certificates for seafood exports through Korea that were not, in fact, under their control.
Millions of pounds of seafood are shipped to Korea annually to take advantage of the country's vast cold storage and warehouse infrastructures.
It's the job of the United States Department of Commerce (USDC) Seafood Inspection Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to verify the safety of seafood exports scheduled to be further exported to the European Union, the Republic of China and other areas by signing a health certificate.
