The Uruguayan government invested a total of $4.59 million (€3.3 million) between 2007 and 2013 to strengthen its national fisheries sector through the development of the Uruguay Fisheries Management Project.
This initiative was launched by the National Aquatic Resources Directorate (Dinara), together with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in July 2007.
Uruguay has traditionally been an agricultural country with limited development of fisheries, despite having a coastline of over 700 kilometers on the Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean.
