European shrimp suppliers have been hit especially hard by the early mortality syndrome (EMS) crisis, Gorjan Nikolik, seafood analyst at Rabobank, told IntraFish.

With the disease devastating production in Asia, prices have skyrocketed, adding to the macro-economic problems in its main markets, which include Spain, Portugal and Italy.

Even though global supply contraction could be about 8-10 percent for 2013 -- less if wild shrimp is included -- imports in the European Union (EU) and the United States are falling much faster.
