This means fish grown on land-based farms such as shrimp, tilapia and catfish will be allowed to carry the USDA “organic” designation once it becomes available, while net pen-raised salmon and other species grown in ocean pens won’t be able to use the label.
"I was disappointed to see the deferral of any recommendations on net-pen culture or culture of aquatic animals that require a diet that includes fish. I had hoped that the Livestock Committee would at least begin to address some of the specifics," Neil Sims, president of Kona Blue, told IntraFish.
