Ricardo Klassen, general manager at Mainstream, told IntraFish on Tuesday 198,000 salmon escaped Dec. 31 from the company's Chidhuapi 2 site. The salmon escaped after their cages broke open while strong winds and high waves battered them during a storm.
“I can confirm that there was an escape of fish from a 12-cage pen on Chidhuapi 2 site, on Calbuco’s area,” said Klassen.
The company is moving ahead with rescue plans to retrieve the remaining escaped fish. A newspaper report says more than 240,000 salmon were in the cages when strong winds and waves broke them open, but Klassen says there were 198,000 fish in the cages.
