Sunday's shock news of a disease "resembling" the dreaded early mortality syndrome (EMS) cropping up in Indian shrimp farms has not been confirmed by Indian officials, who say the disease might be white spot syndrome (WSS) instead.

"According to reports we have now, it might be white spot syndrome baculovirus complex (WSSV)," P. Mohanasundaram, director of the aquaculture department at Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), told IntraFish. The tests were done at the Rajiv Gandhi Center for Aquaculture, he said.

"We have to verify the field inputs before we make an official statement [about the matter]," said N. Ramesh,
