Giles Coren, a television personality and respected food critic with British newspaper The Guardian, was officially named new spokesman for a nationwide frozen foods campaign for Birds Eye on Friday, a move that sparked immediate controversy.

Coren, who has urged Britons to stop eating cod, was ridiculed in The Independent, another major British daily, for the apparent hypocrisy of being the face of one of the world’s largest cod buyers.

“Coren can be exclusively revealed as the new face of Britain’s most famous producer of fish fingers,” The Independent wrote Feb.
