Tilapia comes in a wide range of colors, and those different colors have found corresponding market niches.
David Penman of the university's genetics and reproduction research group explained the color diversity.
"Tilapia originate from Africa, and what we are attempting to do here is to develop a red tilapia modeled on the tilapia species that fetches the best prices in the market now the red Nile tilapia," Penman said in June.
"The red tilapia we are developing here is a hybrid, or a mixture of diverse tilapia species.
