A union of 27 Russian fish processors said it would appeal the decision by the Russian veterinary agency,Rosselkhoznadzor, to temporarily ban 13 Norwegian fresh salmon and trout exporters from the market.

The decision violates Russian law and Rosselkhoznadzor should be investigated, Fish Union’s director, Sergey Gudkov, said in a statement.

"Fish Union has no doubt that some Norwegian companies actually violated veterinary rules adopted by the Customs Union [the union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan],” Gudkov said.

However, he said, many of the factories that were shut off had not been criticized by Rosselkhoznadzor over the past few years -- so including them in the list of companies to be banned goes against Russian law.
