On Monday, the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries opened up unrestricted fishing for cod in the north of Norway for the coastal fleet with vessels between 11 and 28 meters.
Codfarmers is currently slaughtering for full steam, and will maintain tempo until February. So far prices have been disappointing and are around NOK 25 (€2.97/$4.38) per kilogram.
“Whether this price will be affected by the free fishing, or that the market knows there’s still 60 percent left of the cod quota, is hard to say,” said Malling.
