UK scallop fishermen reached a historic agreement with the French fishing industry which will end years of disputes over scallop grounds off the French coast.
The agreement involves the French giving the UK scallop sector western waters kilowatt (kW) days in return for the United Kingdom agreeing to closures to UK vessels in areas in VIId and VIIe fished by the French.
It will also give UK scallopers much more freedom to fish in Area VII throughout the year.
The deal follows a top level meeting between the UK Scallop Association and French fishing industry representatives and government officials from both countries in London last month.
