Landings of king and queen scallops in the UK have almost doubled in volume in the last five years, from 28,000 metric tons in 2008 to 53,900 metric tons in 2012. They are now the second most important species for the UK industry after shrimp.
Landings have been worth an approximate average of £120 million (€150 million) per year in recent years and the scallop sector provides 600 jobs in catching and 750 in processing, according to an EU marketing report published by the European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture.
